1. Make sure the music doesn’t have lyrics because lyrics will distract your concentration. Words will fill your mind and ruin your concentration and the purpose of meditation.
2. Choose relaxing music with a soft rhythm. This is more likely to help you clear your mind and focus just on the rhythm. If are able to achieve a higher level of meditation, choose music with a faster rhythm or beats or anything that you really enjoy listening to as this will not distract you.

3. Experiment. Although soft and relaxing music is usually best, try other types of music in case they suit you better.

4. Simple and soothing music is sure to focus your attention. If you don’t have the luxury of time to experiment with different types of music then play what you know will work. You may prefer classical sounds or sounds of nature like the clapping of thunder, waves, sounds of insects or the wind. Alternative options can be simple instruments like the tibetan singing bowl, the flute, sitar or tamboura, all of which are known to have meditative inducing qualities.

When deciding on your meditation music, it is important to find something that helps induce deep concentration and not deep sleep. If you practice your mediation in the same place, then it is best if you play the same meditation music. But if you prefer different places then play different types of medication music to help you adjust to the place.
